Ugh... Jesus help us.

Well little Micah had a rough day today.  He was spitting, hitting and biting his teacher when she wanted him to do something he didn't want to do.  Any suggestions?

What next?

Does he have behavior goals in his IEP? If not, call a new IEP and put them in there. I would start there and then have a Behavior Modification Plan (identifies the target behavior, what leads up to it, and how to respond when it happens) put together by the IEP team. Putting the behavior goals in the IEP puts it in writing that they have identified behaviors that need to be addressed and that there is a plan in place to work on them. It should also prevent him from being suspended (it can happen) because it says that the behaviors are related to his disability. And they are, it could be from frustrations, a communication problem....
I am a Special education teacher and have three boys with Ds. My oldest is 22 and when he was in 5th grade, we had to do all of this. He was spitting and he got suspended because they said the spitting was posing a health threat to others. Once the behaviors goals were put in the IEP and the BMP was put into place, things changed. They also ended up changing his aid which helped a great deal, but most of it was due to frustration. I kept the behavior goals in his IEP until HS just in case, but after 5th grade, the behaviors were pretty much gone.

LOTS of prayer... Emma's having a rough transition too. Different behaviors, but communication none the less. He's talking to you. Now to figure out what they're saying. :(

The more I read about your Micah, the more he reminds me of our Grifyn. We too deal with behaviors that are much like what you describe. Like Micah, Grifyn is very smart, catches on quickly and is a complete charmer. I do COMPLETELY understand your struggles and frustrations. With Grifyn, it's attention seeking behavior....and he doesn't care if it's positive or negative attention. It's also occassionally used as a way for him to control his environment. So, we have to have a VERY detailed behavior plan in place at school.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I understand! It doesn't help, but sometimes it's nice to know that others are there too.
Hang in there! It gets better....or at least manageable!
